“Coffee with MC”: A Conversation About Dog Photography, Passion, and the Photo That Stole the Cover

From Passion to Portraits: How Crystal Coast Dog Got Started

This week, I was honored to be a guest on Coffee with MC, a weekly interview series hosted by Mary Cheatham and Meg from Mary Cheatham King Realty. We talked about dog photography (of course!), my business Crystal Coast Dog, and the cover image that recently stole the hearts of locals across Carteret County.

If you’re new here: I’m Jennifer Wakefield, the photographer behind Crystal Coast Dog. I specialize in fine art dog portraits for obsessed dog parents (you know who you are). It’s all about storytelling through artwork—because your dog deserves more than just a spot on your camera roll. They deserve a place on your walls and in your heart.

The Photo That Made the Cover

One of the highlights of our conversation was chatting about Brigsby—a corgi on a kayak whose portrait was selected as the cover image for this year’s Carteret Curated People’s Choice Awards magazine. The photo is playful, bold, and pure North Carolina coastal charm.

Honestly? I didn’t expect it to be chosen.

I had my bets on an image of horses submitted by someone else. But the people spoke, and I’m beyond honored they connected with Brigsby’s spirit the way I did when I captured that moment.

Why I Do What I Do (Hint: His Name Was Maddox)

There was an unexpected part of the interview too. When the topic of my heart dog, Maddox, came up—I got choked up.

He’s the reason I started photographing dogs. Maddox was my “old man,” the one who taught me how deep the bond between human and dog can be. I’m not much of a crier, but the emotion caught me off guard. That connection still drives everything I do. I want every client to have artwork that helps them remember their dog the way they feel them.

Real Talk: Saying "Um" and Showing Up Anyway

Let me be real: I had a moment of cringing listening to myself afterward. My brain lagged behind my mouth, and the “ums” were... plentiful. But you know what? That’s real life. I’m not polished, but I’m passionate. And I think people connect with that rawness — at least I hope they do.

So if you're nervous about putting yourself out there—whether it’s in front of a camera or behind one—this is your sign to do it anyway. Someone out there needs what you have to offer, even if you say “um” too much.

The Dog-Led Philosophy Behind My Work

When I photograph your dog, it’s not about perfect poses or studio perfection—it’s about them. Their silly habits, their soulful eyes, the way one ear stands up and the other flops down.

Every session is dog-led. I work with each dog’s personality, energy, and pace to make sure they feel safe, happy, and seen. And I’m always looking for those quiet, in-between moments that show who they really are. That’s what becomes the artwork on your walls.

How to Book a Session (Or Just Say Hi)
