The Ultimate Guide to a Photo Session with Your Dog

Everything you need to know to create artwork you'll treasure forever

Because they’re not just a pet—they’re your whole world

You already have a million photos of your dog on your phone—but if we’re being honest, how many of them are worthy of the living room wall? Or the fireplace mantel? Or the space right above your desk where their sweet face can make your whole day better?

That’s what this session is really about: capturing who they are—their quirks, their expressions, the way they look at you—and turning it into artwork that becomes part of your home and your story.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been thinking about a session for a while. Maybe you’re waiting for the “right time.” Here’s the truth: the right time is now. They’re never too wild, too old, too young, or too shy. I’ve worked with hundreds of dogs and each one has been magic.

Choosing the Right Session for Your Dog

Every dog is different—which is why no two sessions are ever the same. I offer a variety of session types to fit your dog’s personality and your artwork goals. Whether you want a clean studio look, something wild and windswept on the beach, or a meaningful Celebration Session for an aging or ill pet, we’ll find the perfect fit together.

During our planning call, we talk through your dog's personality, energy level, and needs. Got a nervous pup? We’ll pick a calm, quiet spot—or stay in the studio. Got a puppy who can’t sit still? That’s fine—I’ve got tricks (and lots of patience). Got a dog with limited mobility? We work around it. Every dog leads their own session.

And we’ll also think about your home. If your style leans coastal farmhouse, a soft natural session may pair beautifully with your walls. If your décor is bold and modern, a studio session with a dramatic black backdrop might be the way to go. Where your artwork will live helps guide our entire plan.

From Inquiry to Artwork: What to Expect

Step 1: Reach out

The earlier, the better—depending on the season, I may book out 2–3 months in advance. When you inquire, you’ll get a reply within 24 hours with a link to schedule a call.

Step 2: Let’s chat

We’ll spend 15–30 minutes talking about your dog, your vision, and any questions you have. Want to meet in person first? Come by the studio—your pup is welcome too!

Step 3: Session day

We'll meet at the chosen location and let your dog lead the way. The session typically lasts 1–2 hours, filled with play, treats, and breaks. Don’t worry about behavior—we’ll go at their pace.

Step 4: The reveal

About a week later, we’ll meet in the studio to view your images, eat some chocolate, and choose your favorites. I’ll help you design the perfect album or wall display.

Step 5: Delivery

Your custom artwork is carefully produced and delivered within 6–8 weeks. Trust me—it’s worth the wait.

How to Prepare for Your Session

Here’s your go-to checklist:

  • ✦ Exercise your dog beforehand to help them settle in

  • ✦ Bring a flat collar and basic 6' leash

  • ✦ Pack water and treats (I’ve got some too, but bring favorites if your dog has allergies or is picky)

  • ✦ Bring a favorite toy if it helps with motivation

  • ✦ Visit the groomer a few days before (not day-of!)

  • ✦ Bring one bag to carry it all

The Session: Relaxed, Playful, and Dog-Led

I don’t run sessions on a timer or expect your dog to perform like a show pup. We give them time to sniff, settle, and trust. Some dogs warm up in minutes, others take longer—and that’s okay. I’ve photographed dogs who barked the entire first 15 minutes, dogs who rolled in sand mid-shot, and dogs who only listened when bribed with cheese. All of them? Gorgeous.

We’ll take breaks. We’ll let them lead. And we’ll get the shot—because I know how to work with who they are, not force them into something they’re not.

And yes—you can (and should!) be in the photos. You don’t have to pose. I’ll guide you into natural, storytelling moments that capture the heart of your bond.

What if My Dog... (FAQ Quickfire)

...Can’t be off-leash?
Totally fine! Most dogs stay leashed during the session for safety. I remove leashes from ordered images in Photoshop.

...Wears a harness or gentle leader?
I recommend switching to a flat collar for portraits. Harnesses can be hard to edit out—but we can use them in between shots.

...Is reactive or nervous around other dogs?
We’ll choose a quiet location or rent a private one. I’ve worked with reactive dogs and understand how to make it work safely.

...Doesn’t sit or stay?
Doesn’t matter! I have so many tricks and techniques to get great shots no matter the obedience level.

...Has special needs or limited mobility?
We go at their pace. I’ve photographed senior dogs, tripod dogs, blind dogs—you name it. They’re all welcome.

...Needs to reschedule?
No problem. If you or your dog isn’t feeling well, or if Mother Nature throws a curveball, we’ll reschedule at no extra cost.

From Slideshow to Showpiece

Your ordering appointment is where the magic happens. We’ll view a slideshow of your best images (tissues provided), and then work together to select what to print.

Most clients choose:

  • A handcrafted album to tell the full story

  • One large hero wall piece or a collection of smaller pieces

  • Digital files of purchased artwork for sharing online

Not sure what to choose? I’ll guide you through options based on your home, your story, and how you want to relive the moment

Why This Matters

You don’t just love your dog. You build your life around them. You plan outings with them in mind. You cancel things if they’re not feeling well. They are your shadow, your comfort, your chaos, your joy.

And their time with us? Is never long enough.

Digital files are fine—but they’re not what you reach for when you’re missing them. Art on your wall reminds you that you were their whole world. That you gave them the life they deserved. That their story mattered.

Don’t Wait. The Time is Now.

You’ll never regret doing this—only waiting too long.

Whether your dog is full of puppy zoomies or sleeping a little longer these days, there is no better time to preserve your bond. I’ll take care of the rest.
