Meet ZZ: The Loyal Pit Mix Still Waiting for Her Forever Home
Some dogs carry stories heavier than their paws should ever bear. Zaleah—better known as ZZ—is one of them.
At just 10 months old, she first entered Carteret County Humane Society. Since then, she’s been surrendered, briefly adopted, abandoned on a property with her brother Rocky, and left to survive on scraps until kind strangers stepped in. She has spent over half of her six years in the shelter. Through it all, ZZ has remained the same: gentle, loyal, and hopeful.
Today, Rocky has found a home. And ZZ is still waiting.
A Day Out in June: Brave, Polite, and Hopeful
Her first adventure was back in June. Volunteer Noelle and I took ZZ on a Doggy Day Out to Neuse Sport Shop in Cedar Point.
She walked confidently through the aisles, politely sniffing but never bothering anything. She especially loved the treat aisle (naturally!) and even made friends with children playing in the toy section. ZZ soaked up all the sights and smells with quiet bravery.
From there, we headed to Boathouse Creek Trails. ZZ lit up at the chance to bird- and squirrel-watch, though no chase opportunities came her way. She happily greeted a gentleman on the fishing pier, wagging and watching the water.
In the car, ZZ proved herself a front-seat rider through and through—snuggled in close, never wanting to be far from her person. That’s when I realized: she isn’t clingy, she’s just a velcro girl who takes comfort in knowing you’re nearby.
A Cozy August Outing: Sploot Queen in Her Element
Just last week, ZZ had her second Doggy Day Out—this time at Noelle’s own home You can she the reel she made of her day here.
Within minutes, she made herself comfortable on the couch, later discovering her true happy place: stretched out in a full sploot in front of the glass door, bird-watching with great intensity. That’s ZZ at her happiest—relaxed, silly, and always keeping an eye on the world.
She wrestled playfully with stuffed toys, then circled back to her glass-door perch. Her favorite toy may change, but one thing is constant: she wants you close enough to see.
Why ZZ Deserves Her Forever
ZZ isn’t perfect—she’ll chase squirrels, and she’ll need a tall fence. But who among us doesn’t come with quirks?
Here’s what she is:
Housebroken and fully vetted
Good with kids and dogs
Loyal, affectionate, and toy-loving
A true companion who thrives in a home environment
She’s overlooked far too long. ZZ doesn’t need dozens of applications. She just needs one—one person, one couple, one family who won’t give up on her.
