I’m So Awkward in Photos…” (But You Don’t Have to Be)

If the thought of being in front of the camera makes you instantly tense up… you’re not alone.

At nearly every session, I hear something like:

“I’m not photogenic.”
“I never know what to do with my hands.”
“This is all for the dog—I’ll just stay out of the pictures.”

Sound familiar?

Well, here’s the good news:
You don’t need to know how to pose.
You just need a photographer who knows how to make you feel seen—and at ease.

Why You Feel Awkward (and Why That’s Totally Normal)

Let’s be honest. Most of us have a stash of terrible yearbook photos or stiff family pictures where we felt anything but relaxed.
So the moment someone points a camera your way, your shoulders rise, your smile freezes, and your brain screams, “What do I do with my face?!”

Here’s the truth:
Feeling awkward is completely normal.
The key to looking natural? It’s not about mastering poses.
It’s about feeling connected, relaxed, and present—especially when your dog is by your side.

Simple Tips to Feel More Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Whether you’re getting in the frame for the first time in years or just need a confidence boost, these are my go-to tips to help you look and feel like your true self:

1️⃣ Keep Moving

Movement creates natural energy.
Instead of freezing in place, try walking slowly with your dog, adjusting your hair, or simply shifting your weight.
These little movements bring your session to life and keep it from feeling too “posed.”

2️⃣ Love On Your Dog

Your dog is your comfort zone—lean into that.
Scratch behind their ears. Snuggle up. Let them lick your face if that’s your thing.
These candid, in-the-moment interactions are what make the photos feel real and meaningful.

3️⃣ Don’t Forget to Breathe

Sounds simple, but a deep breath can transform everything.
It softens your shoulders, relaxes your face, and brings you back to the moment.
(Plus, it helps your dog relax too!)

You’re Not Awkward—You Just Need the Right Photographer

At Crystal Coast Dog Photography, I guide every client through gentle prompts and natural movement that feel more like play than posing.

Most people walk into my studio feeling unsure.
But by the time we’re done, they’ve forgotten the camera is even there.
